Facilities ThoughtExchange

A message from the Superintendent
Superintendent Todd Sesker

At Faribault Public Schools our mission is to empower, energize and engage all students through our commitment to a quality education and by creating an effective learning environment. One of the ways we support that mission is by maintaining high-quality facilities and technologies that meet the needs of our students. Safe, secure, up-to-date facilities support our wonderful staff and play an integral role in the success of our students.

A community task force met six times over the summer to evaluate our school district’s facilities. Their findings revealed four main areas of need: Safety and security, educational alignment, early learning, and deferred maintenance.

Safety and security involves adding security systems including cameras, updating our school entrances to require visitors to check into an office prior to accessing the rest of the building, and creating safer pick-up and drop-off zones.

Educational alignment refers to the way our school’s facilities affect how our students learn. Facilities should support new educational demands such as differentiation of instruction and career and college readiness programs, and meet a variety of learner needs.

Our early learning needs include creating additional space for the students we are currently unable to accommodate at McKinley Early Childhood Center, as well as facilities for staff and additional space for programs and family activities.

Our deferred maintenance needs include bringing buildings and systems up to code, improving building accessibility, and replacing outdated plumbing and ventilation systems.

Our school buildings are part of the Faribault community, so we want to hear how members of our community feel about them, and what future district efforts the community would support to improve them. In addition to engaging the public through the task force meetings and other organized gatherings, we’re using ThoughtExchange, an online communications tool, to ask this question to the Faribault community:

What are the most important considerations we should take into account as we plan for how we maintain and improve our facilities for years to come?

As you are answering the question, please consider the four areas of need outlined by the community task force and how you feel we should prioritize them. The exchange will be open from Oct. 9-Oct. 23.

Go to www.thoughtexchange.com/join and enter 704009672 to join the conversation.

Once you’re logged in, you can post your answer to the question, along with a short explanation. Then you will be prompted to rate the responses of other exchange users from one star (totally disagree) to five stars (totally agree). Feel free to rate as many comments as you like!

Your answers will be used by the task force and the school district as we formulate solutions to our facilities needs.

We appreciate you taking the time to share your thoughts with us.
