Dick Shiels Auditorium dedicated

Family, friends and school staff came together Wednesday, Dec. 12, for a ceremony dedicating the Faribault Middle School auditorium in honor of the late Dick Shiels.

Shiels began working in Faribault schools in 1960. He worked as a social studies and English teacher, and guidance counselor, before serving as junior high principal from 1982-1993. He was also head coach of the Falcon high school wrestling team from 1965-1983. Former Superintendent Richard Berge and Shiels’ son Tim spoke at the dedication.

“It is appropriate to name the middle school auditorium for Dick because he strongly supported the triple A in education – academics, arts and athletics, throughout his career. He encouraged students of all abilities to participate and perform to achieve success in all areas,” Berge said. “As a colleague and friend for over 50 years, I had the opportunity to observe Dick Shiels’ commitment to the community of Faribault and the Faribault Public Schools. He practiced, and demonstrated, in his personal and professional life, those qualities and values of compassion, dedication, hard work, and competence we all want to see in our public school staff.”
